Katie Holmes, 33, and Tom Cruise, 49 (he will be 50 on Tuesday), have split after five-years of marriage and a child together, Suri Cruise, 6.
Holmes filed for divorce in New York City June 27 citing “irreconcilable differences.” The divorce will be messy, and contentious, since, after some “nastiness,” Holmes filed in secret in NYC while Cruise is in Iceland where he’s currently filming (they wore their wedding rings as recently as the day before filing and they were seen holding hands when she visited the set two weeks ago).
He was “blindsided,” insist sources who say he’s “very sad” and “did not see this coming.”
“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” said Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
Cruise’s rep has responded with a statement: ”Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”
TMZ.com claims the cause of the split is concern over their daughter’s increased involvement in Scientology. It presents a concern for Holmes, who’s never been as indoctrinated as her estranged husband. Moreover, Holmes may NEED the sole custody she’s seeking to remain in her daughter’s life and not be frozen out the way Nicole Kidman was with Connor and Isabella Cruise.
Holmes is seeking sole legal custody, and “primary residential custody,” and a “suitable amount” of child support. There’s a prenup, but she is still asking for a division of their property. Sources say the split was not motivated by money.
